Socking A Faux Pas

Snob and I have been talking in recent weeks about the proliferation of a very disturbing fashion trend: Sandals worn with tights or socks. GASP!

Ever since the spring fashion issues have hit newsstands we’ve realized we’re in for a challenging spring shoe season. This became even more apparent after I read this Sunday’s New York Times Style Section. Bill Cunningham's "On The Street" piece did a round-up of fashion trends in Paris, and to my dismay his piece was plastered with visions of strappy shoes worn with tights.

The NYT piece isn’t the worst of it. Kate Spade ads suggest colored bobby socks and slide sandals. Dior models don patterned tights with t-strap heels. I’ve even seen a slight comeback of stirrup leggings! What is this world coming to? I mean, what’s next? T-shirt clips and scrunchie socks?

I suppose some fashion forward femmes can definitely pull this look off, however coming from someone who prefers to keep her day-glo sock wearing days in the 1980’s I prefer to refrain from partaking in this retro fashion movement.

i would be laughed at uncontrollably if i tried this where i live. i guess i'll just look at my magazines and wonder why people decided this was a good look to bring back...

bama girl: I've seen the footless leggings look. With pumps and a mini some people can definitely pull it off, but I'm just way too practical to try it. I'd look like I'm trying to hard or something...

All I have to say is, black socks and white leather tennis-shoes.

Last season, a lot of the major designers were trying to get guys into white belts. WTF was that?

Following fashion is for the mindless. If you can't be originally original, don't be unoriginally original: it's better to be originally unoriginal, and stick with the timeless classics.

Only the people who start or ignore fashions are worthy of sartorial respect. Style, of course, is another matter entirely (and, as you have pointed out, often at odds with fashion).

i agree with you...but ummm i was kind of looking forward to wearing my hyper color t shirt complete with a t shirt clip, side pony tail, scrunchi, leggings, scrunch socks and some god awful bright shoe... i knew i was stylin' in the 3rd grade!

voice of dissent here. one thing i love about london is the acceptance of a multitude of fashion. people wear tons of shit to express themself, some of it actually out there in a good way. It makes US fashion look like drone-ish. the look in the NYT is very european, and you see it loads here and in paris. I wouldn't go neon or really bright (u r right, eye catching on a mag spread, WTF in person), but it can be done right. and i have a pair of mini black and brown heathered leg warmers that are not bulky, wear them with these cool Bally heels and black mini, and always get compliments. please still visit my blog!
